Stand too close to a HONG XI artwork and you see only material. Rice. Coffee. Thread. A thousand small, ordinary things.
Take a step back, and the material disappears. A face appears. A landscape. A memory.
This is the lesson of distance. We see the whole only when we are far enough away. Up close, life is detail, fragments, confusion, the ordinary. From a distance, life is a picture, coherent, meaningful, complete.
Sometimes we need distance to understand the whole picture. And sometimes, we need to come closer to remember what the picture is made of.
